This imagined scene was inspired by The Culper Spy Ring set up by George Washington during the Revolutionary War in my hometown of Setauket, NY. Anna Smith Strong, the only female spy in the group, hung different petticoats on her clothesline to send signals to couriers across the sound. Growing up here, where I was surrounded by tall trees and hidden coves, it was fascinating to think about the history that preceded me.
